More Heart Warming Stories

We’ve had lots of great
responses from Monday’s
article in The Sun newspaper

Lucie Burke emailed us with her story

"I have two children who were both born with this condition, my daughter is 8 and my son is 4. I wanted a message of hope to be sent out to Cordelia's parents and your readers to say that children who have open heart surgery after a TGA can lead normal childhood lives and have lots of fun play times. My two children (pictured above) lead very busy lives, they both attend school and pre-school and go to gymnastic lessons together. My daughter also attends stage school, Cubs and is learning to play the clarinet. My son has swimming lessons and is doing very well, he recently got a badge for swimming 5 metres on his back! We visit theme parks and they go on every ride they can. They play all types of games with their friends, the more energetic the better! People who do not know about their condition are always very shocked when they find out what they have been through. Most of all they are very happy children and have a great outlook on life! They love looking at their baby pictures and know that their scars are there for a very important reason. We call it their “Magic Zip that Doctors needed to open to fix their poorly hearts”. They are both proud of them and, to date, have never shown any embarrassment of them. We have told them that people may look and stare, some may ask them about it and others will just look but that it is nothing to worry or be ashamed of, it is them and we love them just the way they are!

The British Heart Foundation is a fantastic charity. My husband has, since our children were born, completed the London to Brighton bike ride 5 times to raise money for them. We could never thank their hard work and dedication enough, or that of the Doctors, Surgeons and Nurses who looked after them both (and us) at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London Hospital, but thank you all so much. Keep up the excellent work you do for so many people and their families".
